Manuscript Submission Guidelines
Great Source welcomes submission of supplementary materials for students in grades Pre-K–12 and their teachers.
Great Source seeks proposals and submissions whose pedagogy and content are:
  • appealing to students
  • proven classroom effective
  • consistent with current research.
A proposal describes a project idea; a submission is a more fully developed plan, together with samples of the work. Please note that Great Source's main publishing efforts are instructional and focus on the school market. For all materials, the reading level must be appropriate to the skill level of the students and the nature of the materials.

For all submissions:
  • A one-page statement of the significance and philosophy behind the proposed work. What distinguishes your submission from the other materials out there? Why do you feel your submission is important? What is the pedagogic difference between your work and all the other materials used in classrooms? What do teachers and students have to know already in order to use your materials?

  • A one-page assessment of the proposed work's strength in the market. What is the submission's main competitor? What unique marketing challenges might this submission present? What is the target audience for your work and what is your idea of the size of the market for this work? Please include a description of your expectations for distribution and sales.
For print materials:
  • A complete, detailed table of contents.

  • Sample materials, including at least one complete sample chapter. We do not need to see the entire manuscript at this point.
For software, video, or other nonprint materials:
  • A detailed description of the materials and their intended use within the classroom. For software, we request submission of prototypes where such exist, or some combination of storyboards, sketches of screens, descriptions of interaction between software and users, and functionality specifications. For video, we would like sample videos, or portions of the script or storyboard.

  • A description of all accompanying print materials. What will teachers and students require in the way of supplemental manuals, workbooks, reference material, etc.? We request samples of these supplementary materials, if available.

  • A project plan. How will the materials be developed? What materials, if any, will need permissions? For software, how will it be designed, who will do the coding, and how will the software be tested? For video, who will film and edit the project? What level of production on the publisher's part is anticipated to make the finished product?
For a proposal or project idea
We are happy to evaluate your ideas for print and other media. We suggest that you include as much of the material described above as possible to assist us in our evaluation, but welcome query letters accompanied by a thorough description of the project. Please note that we are unable to make any commitment to publication based on a proposal. If we are interested in your idea, we will encourage you to make a full submission.

After a submission is received, we will notify you that we received it, and it will be evaluated by one or more editors to see if it fits into our current publishing program. At this stage we may do some production and marketing research to help us determine the feasibility of the project. In addition to evaluating the materials ourselves, we may also circulate them briefly for external review, although we maintain strict confidentiality in this stage. The length of time spent evaluating materials can vary from weeks to months, depending on the materials and our workload. At the end of this evaluation cycle, we will tell you: 1) the submission does not meet our needs, 2) it does not meet our needs in its current form, but you are encouraged to revise it and resubmit it, or 3) we are interested in working with you to finish developing and to publish your work.

Please note that an expression of interest on our part at any time while we are evaluating the material should not be construed as a commitment to enter into a publishing agreement until such an agreement is negotiated and signed. Great Source's evaluation of a project does not prohibit it from developing or releasing a work similar to the submitted work, provided that any similar work is developed or obtained independently of the submitted work.

Once we agree to publish a project, Great Source will send you a Publishing Agreement that defines all rights and specifies all responsibilities. In general, Great Source provides all publishing services, from consulting on development through copyright registration and order fulfillment. You, as creator of the work, are responsible for delivery of content that is consistent with our quality standards.
