LEP Students
No Child Left Behind
The U.S. Department of Education announced final regulations for recently arrived limited English proficient (LEP) students. The changes are designed to give states more flexibility in assessing LEP students.

• States can exempt recently arrived LEP students from one administration of the state's reading/language arts assessment.
• Recently arrived LEP students must take state math assessments (with accommodations) and state science assessments (beginning in 2007-2008).
• States are not required to include these students' in AYP determinations.
