Here are some comments from students about the Reader's Handbook for grades 6-8.

Introduction
I liked how you related a lot of the helping tips to real-life situations. It is easy to understand what you are trying to explain because it is a very good vocabulary level.

I like the reading and writing process because all of that was very helpful to people and me. I like all of it because it made a lot of sense to me and it was interesting and not that boring when I read it.

Improving Vocabulary
I liked how you gave ideas on how to remember your vocabulary. It was nice to know what words would best boost your vocabulary.

The Reading Process
It was very thoroughly explained and supported with details and examples. It is easy to understand because you can try it yourself and practice doing it on your own. It explains how you can do it yourself by giving you easy to follow steps.

Focus on Persuasive Writing
I liked how you used charts to help organize your information. Looking at them made some of the things clearer to me and helped me to form my opinion. I liked how you explained things beforehand and gave me stuff to look for in the article. I liked the topic you picked. It was easy to relate to and see how it fit in my own life.

I like that the goals are written out first so you know what you are going to learn. I also like the use of charts, showing how you can collect your thoughts.

Word Parts: Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots
It was cool to know the meanings of some prefixes and suffixes because it helps me comprehend other words. It helped me to know some Greek and Latin words because in some words I couldn't figure out what the root word was because it was Greek or Latin.

Elements of Fiction
One thing that I really liked about this section was how they used it as an "Elements of Fiction" glossary. I think that it's a very good idea so if they need to look up something quickly they won't waste time flipping through a regular glossary. Another thing I liked was when they used bullets or numbers to list things instead of just writing them out. This is sometimes very helpful for someone because if they don't have time to read the whole section to understand what to do then they can just look for a list to help them. One more thing I liked was how the headings or titles were in different fonts, bigger and had dark borders around them. This made them stick out and helped me to know that exactly I'd be reading about next.

Focus on Speeches
I liked how you broke the speech up into parts and sorted out the information given. I liked how you explained that learning the background of the speech (when, where, and why) is useful. You're right! It really is! I liked how you gave examples for ways the writer will try to present his/her information and support it.

Reading a Website
I liked how it's set up so that it's not too boring to keep reading-it sounds like the author is at your level, how it has lots of little information boxes and stuff ot make the topic more attracting, and how it doesn't jump around with the topics-it finishes one and goes on to another.

Michael McCanna

Strategy Handbook
I really liked how it told how you should use the strategy. That way if you don't know how or are not very good at one, you can learn how. I thought it was a good idea to have all the strategies of reading so that kids know how to read.
