The first step in writing is having something to write about. You'll need to choose a topic, research your topic, and create an outline before you are ready to write.

1. Select a Topic

Use the "Basics of Life List" to choose a general subject. Watch the prewriting tutorial for more information on the "Basics of Life List."
Create a cluster to narrow the subject to a specific topic. Watch the prewriting tutorial for more information on clusters.

2. Gather Details

Create a gathering grid to direct your research.
Use books, magazines, and the internet to find information about your topic.

3. Write Controlling Sentences

Write a thesis statement that focuses on one part of your topic.
Write topic sentences for each main point.

4. Organize Your Information

Use an outline to organize your report.
Keep track of the source of each piece of information.
