Help Your Child Prepare for the SAT® Essay
The SAT® requires students to write an essay in 25 minutes on an issue presented in a short excerpt and use examples to support their position.
What your Child Needs to Know About the SAT® Essay:
The essay is graded holistically by two high school or college teachers on a scale of 1-6 and the two scores are added together. Holistic scoring means that the score is based on the scorer's overall impression of the essay.
Students should take the time to read the excerpt closely and make sure they understand what it is asking. Essays that are off topic will receive a score of zero.
Since students only have 25 minutes to write the essay, it doesn't have to be perfect. It is a first draft.
The opening paragraph should state his or her position on the issue.
Students should practice writing in response to a prompt for 25 minutes so they get a sense of how to manage the allotted time.
Students should use examples from literature, life, and reading to support their point of view. They should take the time to fully explain the example and how it supports their position.
Sentence beginnings and length should vary.
Choosing interesting words and strong verbs will make the essay come alive.
Students should try to use correct grammar, punctuation, mechanics, spelling and legible handwriting. Essays with a few mechanical errors can still receive the top score but students should take the time to proof the essay to make it as correct as possible so the scorers can understand what the essay is communicating.
