Theme Analysis: Prewriting
The first step in writing is having something to write about. Your students will need to choose a book, chapter, or story to write about and plan their theme analysis before they are ready to write.
1. Choose a Topic

Use a theme chart to gather information about how a theme develops during the story. |

3. Write a Focus Statement

Write a sentence that identifies the theme and tells why it is important.

4. Decide on an Organization Plan

Time Order: Show how the theme develops from the beginning to the end.

|
Order of Importance: Show how the main parts of the theme relate to each other.

Logical Order: Show how different ideas fit together.
