Plot Summary: Prewriting

The first step in writing is having something to write about. Your students will need to choose a book, chapter, or story to summarize and plan their summary before they are ready to write.

1. Choose a Topic

	Choose a book, chapter, or story to summarize.

2. Create a Time Line

	Use a time line to write down the main events in the order they occurred.

3. Write a Focus Statement

	Write a sentence that sums up the plot.

4. Write Topic Sentences

	Write a topic sentence for each major event.

5. Outline Your Summary

	Use an outline to plan your plot summary.
