Peer Responding


Peer responding is a great way for students to get feedback and develop a wider sense of audience for their writing. It can also promote critical reading skills as they learn to give thoughtful suggestions to other students.


Guidelines for Peer Responding

Make copies of all the pieces students will critique. For older students, you can consider handing out the copies ahead of time so students can read them before meeting or you can hand them out at the start of peer responding time.
Divide the class in groups of 2 or up to 4-5 students.
The author introduces and reads his or her piece aloud.
Have your students use a response form to write what they like about the paper, their questions, and suggestions for revising.
After the author finishes reading, the group can comment on what images stand out and what is good in the paper, offer suggestions on how to improve the paper, and ask questions.
