Comparison-contrast Essay: Prewriting


The first step in writing is having something to write about. Your students will need to choose two subjects to write about and plan their essay before they are ready to write.


1. Select Two Subjects

Select two subjects that could be made into an interesting comparison-contrast essay.


2. Create a Venn Diagram

Use a Venn diagram to gather and organize the similarities and differences about your subjects.


3. Write a Focus Statement

Write a sentence that names your topic and focuses on one part of it.


4. Write Topic Sentences

List main points about the similarities and differences.
Write a topic sentence for each main point.


5. Create an Outline

Use an outline to organize the details of your comparison-contrast essay.
