Character Sketch: Writing

Remind your students that the first draft doesn't have to be perfect. They will have time to revise later.

Students can use a character sketch template to create a first draft.

1. Beginning

Name the title and the author.
Introduce the character and write your focus statement.

2. Middle

Describe the character by using one or more of the following strategies. Describe the character's appearance; show how the character changes during the story; or describe the character's personality, strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

3. Ending

Restate the focus and summarize the main points.
Leave the reader with something to think about.
