Biographical Narrative: Prewriting

The first step in writing is having something to write about. Your students will need to choose a topic, gather details, and write a focus statement before they are ready to write.

1. Select a Topic

	List interesting people and important experiences they had. Choose one experience to write about.

2. Gather Details

	Interview the person, if possible, or read about the experience.
	Use a sensory chart to gather details.
	Use a time line to organize events in the order they occurred.

3. Add Focus Statement

	Write one sentence that sums up the importance of the experience.
