How do I hook upward bound high school students on the importance of writing for an extended period of time i.e. two hours? I want them to understand the importance of writing for themselves. |

It is a wonderful discovery indeed when students figure out that writing can enhance their lives. And I like your attitude, you want them to discover writing is this tool, not tell them. We all want students understand that writing can be a wonderful tool for reflection, for connection, for release. Here are a few ways I’d approach it in your situation.
First of all, I wouldn’t want them to write for two hours straight. That’s a recipe for writer’s block and, in the end, they wouldn’t discover the truth about how wonderful writing can be in your life. It may just reinforce some negative associations that I believe you’re trying to combat.
