Title VI-B — Rural Education Initiative

Title VI-B provides additional formula funds and flexibility in the use of certain federal funds within small, rural districts. States administer funds through formula, by competitive process, or through alternative formulas that target funds to high-poverty districts.

What Will It Fund?

Title VI funds may be used for a variety of services and activities that create instructional equity in reading and mathematics for small, rural schools. State departments are required to establish specific educational goals for this funding.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for this program, a district must: (1) have an average daily attendance of fewer than 600 students or serve only schools located in counties with a population density of fewer than 10 persons per square mile and (2) serve only schools located in an area defined by the U.S. Department of Education as being rural or rural near an urban area or The LEA can also demonstrate that the district is located in an area defined as rural by a state government agency.

Funding Level

Funding is allocated on a per student level based on number of children eligible for free and reduced lunches. Contact your local district office or state department of education to determine the size of your school's individual allocation.
