Reader's Handbook: A Student Guide for Reading and Learning

|
|
he Reader’s Handbook Program is a research-based resource that introduces and reviews the essential strategies students need to become competent, active readers in any subject area. Aligned with state content standards, the Reader’s Handbook Program provides preparation for state reading assessments by helping students to understand the reading process and master critical comprehension skills in grades 3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
Research
Increasingly, students are assessed on measures such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which evaluate their ability to read texts critically, make inferences, make connections, and demonstrate awareness of text structure. While some children develop naturally into strategic readers, many require systematic instruction. Students who receive systematic and explicit instruction in comprehension strategies exhibit increased motivation and reading achievement (Pressley et al, 1989; Rosenshine & Meister, 1994; Rosenshine, Meister & Chapman, 1996). All children benefit from meta-cognitive training that helps them to systematically confront barriers when faced with difficult texts.
Strategies must be specifically taught and modeled for students who are then given opportunities to apply what they’ve learned. Students must be given enough practice in how the strategies can be applied so that they are internalized. When these procedures are acquired, the reader becomes independent of the teacher. Using them, the reader effectively interacts with the text without assistance. A common aspect of individual and multiple strategy instruction is the active involvement of motivated readers who read more text as a result of instruction” (National Reading Panel, 2000). Becoming an independent, self-regulated, thinking reader is a goal that can be achieved through instruction in text comprehension.

Professional Development
Reader’s Handbook Complete Program Package is often implemented with on-site teacher training to ensure fidelity of implementation. In addition, interactive, customizable Read Up! Workshops introduce participants to proven strategies to develop students' reading and learning capabilities. Designed for educators in all subject areas, Read Up! Workshops provide step-by-step instruction to help break down the process of reading and learning for students in grades 3-12. The workshops explore the difference between reading textbooks, reading for tests, and reading fiction and nonfiction, and offer practice on the strategies students need to handle a variety of texts.
Expert guidance on establishing a Reading Initiative in your school or district can help ensure that you meet your short and long-term reading goals.
Parental Involvement
Reader’s Handbooks are student-friendly and comprehensive tools that supplement core-reading programs, review key reading skills and concepts, and reinforce lessons from reading textbooks. Student Applications Books give students additional reading selections, guided practice and lessons to help review and reinforce key reading concepts in the home.
