CCESS is a standards-based content area program designed to help English language learners develop their English language proficiency while learning the big ideas of grade level content in English, mathematics, American history, and science.
Research
Over 4.7 million public school students are English language learners, and by 2010 it is estimated that 25% of all students in the U.S. will be English language learners. To ensure that English language learners develop their language proficiency along with grade level content knowledge, we must rely on research-based strategies proven to support both these needs. The following research-based principles are key to the design of instruction for ACCESS: Building Literacy Through Learning.
Students benefit from the use of graphic organizers and visual representations of information to scaffold instruction.
Students benefit from cooperative and small-group learning activities that allow students to develop their oral language proficiency in a low-risk environment.
Students who are able to converse in English often are still developing their academic English and need support in this area.
Developing students’ vocabulary is key and vocabulary that is practiced in context is more meaningful.
If English language learners are to meet the same high academic standards that all students are expected to meet, they need high-quality, standards-based instruction in all content areas that also includes a focus on language skills.
Students continually develop their English language skills and must have instruction that adjusts for their current proficiency level and moves them forward.
Great Source Research and Effectiveness Reports Available
Access includes pre- and post-tests that allow teachers to identify students’ areas of weakness and track growth and ongoing assessments to help teachers monitor student progress and tailor instruction to meet individual students' needs.
Professional Development
A research-based professional development workshop based on the ACCESS program is available to provide educators with activities and strategies to help English learners at all levels develop their language and vocabulary skills through powerful, differentiated instruction.
