fterschool Achievers: Math Club is a complete, easy-to-use afterschool kit packed with a full year of fun, enriching activities aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards. The activities provide meaningful daily practice to improve students’ confidence and proficiency with number sense, basic operations, algebra, geometry, mental math, measurement, and problem solving and help students develop an understanding of how different types of math problems are related and solved through basic problem-solving strategies.
Research
Studies show that there is a positive relationship between participation in afterschool programs and academic performance (Munoz, 2002; Posner & Vandell, 1994). In fact, “Studies of students who attend high-quality programs for a significant period of time show improvement in academic performance and social competence, higher scores on achievement tests, lower levels of grade retention, improved behavior in school, increased competence and sense of self as a learner, better work habits, fewer absences from school, better emotional adjustments and relationships with parents, and a greater sense of belonging in the community” (Perkin-Gough, 2003 citing Miller, 1999).
Afterschool Achievers: Math Club enhances existing mathematics programs by providing students with extended learning time in mathematics. Additional time spent with mathematics is linked to increased student achievement in the regular classroom (i.e. Miller, 2001). Students who participate in the Afterschool Achievers: Math Club program receive 20-30 minutes of hands-on, engaging math instruction each day in addition to what they receive in class. Increased time spent with mathematics in the Afterschool Achievers: Math Club can help students improve on areas of weaknesses that may not be addressed in a typical classroom (Thomas, 1984; Kane, 1994).
