Maxine Waters
Maxine Waters represents the Thirty-fifth Congressional District of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Born on August 15, 1938, in St. Louis, MO. She earned a B.A. at California State University, Los Angeles, in 1970. She later worked as an official in the Head Start program. She is a Christian and is married to Sidney Williams. They reside in Los Angeles with their two children.
Waters served in the California State Assembly from 1977 through 1991 and was a member of the California Peer Counseling Association, Los Angeles Women's Foundation, and many other organizations. After serving in the California State Assembly, Waters was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. In 2000 she displayed her political strength by being reelected with more than 86 percent of the vote.
Waters serves on the House Banking and Financial Services Committee and House Judiciary Committee. She also serves as the Democratic at-large whip.
