Richard K. "Dick" Armey

Dick Armey is the congressman from the Twenty-sixth Congressional District in Texas.

Born on July 7, 1940, in Cando, ND, Armey now lives in Lewisville, TX. His education includes a B.A. from Jamestown College in 1963, an M.A. from the University of North Dakota in 1964, and a Ph.D. from the University of California in 1969. A Presbyterian, he is married to Susan Byrd and has five children.

From 1964–83, Armey taught economics at the University of Montana, West Texas State University, Austin College, and North Texas State University, where he became a department chair. He has also served as an economic consultant and advisor.

First elected in 1984, Congressman Armey was an important part of Newt Gingrich's "Contract with America" in the 1994 congressional elections. Since 1995, when the Republicans won the majority in the House of Representatives for the first time since 1946, Congressman Armey has served as Republican majority leader. He also serves on the Policy Committee and the Republican Steering Committee. In 2000 he was reelected with almost 73 percent of the vote.
