Alan K. Simpson

Former Republican Senator from Wyoming, 1978–96.

Born in Cody, WY, in 1931, Simpson now lives in Cambridge, MA. He holds a B.S. and a J.D. from the University of Wyoming. After working as an attorney in Wyoming, he served in the Korean War.

In 1959 Simpson became Wyoming’s assistant attorney general and then a Wyoming state representative (1964–78). During his tenure in the House, Simpson became Republican majority whip and majority floor leader. In 1978 he ran for the U.S. Senate and won. During 18 years in the Senate, Simpson chaired the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He was also a member of the Judiciary Committee and many others.

Simpson now teaches at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
