Angus S. King, Jr.
Angus King is governor of Maine. He is only one of two governors who do not belong to either the Democratic or Republican parties.
Angus King was born on March 31, 1944, in Alexandria, VA. He attended Dartmouth College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1966. In 1969 he graduated from the University of Virginia Law School with a J.D. A Episcopalian, he is married to Mary J. Herman. They have four sonsAngus III, Duncan, James, and Benjaminand a daughter, Molly. They reside in Brunswick.
King's other experience includes a stint as a staff attorney for Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Skowhegan and as an attorney in the firm of Smith, Lloyd, and King, between 197583. He also served as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics in the office of then-Senator William D. Hathaway in 1972. In 1983 he became vice-president and general counsel of Swift River/Hafslund Company, an alternative energy development company based in Portland and Boston. Around this time, he began hosting a television show called "Maine Watch," which ran for almost 20 years on Maine's Public Broadcasting Network. In 1989 Governor King also founded and served as president of Northeast Energy Management, Inc., a position he held for five years. In 1994 he was elected to be Maine's governor, and in 1998 he was reelected to a second four-year term.
