Reading & Writing Sourcebooks: 2–5 Lesson Plan

1. Before You Read

Prereading activities prompt students to start thinking about the topic by tapping into their prior knowledge. An introduction for each selection creates initial reading readiness.

2. Read

Brief fiction and nonfiction selections make texts manageable for students while still maintaining their interest.

3. Get Ready to Write

A variety of prewriting activities and graphic organizers help students think about and respond to what they've read while preparing them for a writing activity.

4. Write

Students build on reading skills throughout the selection, eventually working their way to a writing assignment where they can react to the literature while practicing essential grammar, usage, and mechanics skills.

5. Look Back

Each lesson ends with a constructive assessment that asks students to reflect back on what they've read and ask the questions that good readers ask of themselves including: What did this make me think about? Did I enjoy reading it?
